SUSTAINABILITY IN PRACTICE

Here at Green Island Studios I am committed to greening our photographic arts practice. Here are some of the ways that I do this day to day, can you suggest any others?

I am off-grid and seek to use renewable source energy generation as often as possible, the entire premises is powered solely by solar panels and surplus energy is stored in a substantial battery array for future use. I use rechargeable batteries. I have only low-energy lighting, and always turning everything off is the norm, no standby mode for our computers at night!

In the studio, darkrooms, and on-site accommodation I do not use high energy consumption devices such as tumble dryers, dishwashers, air conditioning units and electric heating systems and heavily limit the use of extractor fans and hair dryers.

I am committed to researching and using eco print processing methods wherever possible.

I always ask our suppliers about their own environmental policy and ask if they can use eco ink & papers for production of our products.

I prefer to source reusable materials for our work and have a policy to repair and recycle everything that can’t be reused. I also prefer to purchase second hand kit wherever possible.

I consider our material and foods miles, and try to source local and organic products where possible.

I avoid plastics, excess packaging and disposables in favour of reusable glass and fabric options. I compost all of our organic waste.

I buy clothing and linens made from organic fabrics, and seek out textiles made from recycled fabrics and produced sustainably such as Tencel.

I love to Upcycle! Ask me about our innovative projects with mechanical toys, ancient cameras, orphaned lego and broken solar panels among others.

I love to talk about this so please contact me if you wish to join the discussion!
